What to Bring on Your Ketchikan Fishing Charter
Ketchikan sits in a rainforest, and the weather does what it wants. Dress for it and the day is comfortable in almost any conditions. This is the same packing list we give our own guests.
Bring these
- Layered clothing. Mornings start cool even in July. A warm mid-layer under a jacket beats one heavy coat.
- Rain gear. A genuinely waterproof jacket, and rain pants if you have them. This is the one item people regret skipping.
- Rubber boots or waterproof footwear. Decks get wet. Guests ask about footwear more than almost anything else, and the recommendation never changes. Rubber boots if you have them, waterproof shoes with good grip if you don’t.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen. Glare off the water is real, gray sky or not.
- Your Alaska fishing license. Buy it online from ADF&G before the trip, plus a king salmon stamp when king fishing applies. Details in the FAQ.
- Food and drinks. Bring what you want to eat and drink for the day, especially on a full-day trip. If you’re staying at Clover Pass, ask about arranging a sack lunch.
- Any personal medications, including your preferred motion-sickness remedy if you’re prone to it. (Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about what suits you; that’s their lane, not ours.)
- Camera or phone in a pocket that closes. You’ll want it.
Already on the boat
- Quality, well-maintained rods, reels, tackle, and bait
- Life jackets, including children’s PFDs
- An enclosed, heated cabin to warm up in
- A captain who will happily show you every knot and technique
Bringing kids?
Bring them. Family trips are a regular part of the season here, and kid-sized life jackets are already on board. Pack kids warmer than you think they need, bring snacks they actually like, and note their ages in your trip request so we can plan the day around them.
