Captain Jim and a guest holding a very large halibut on the boat

Ketchikan Halibut Fishing Charters

Big flat fish, the kind of pull you remember, and a fish box of fillets to take home. Halibut fishing out of Clover Pass with Captain Jim.

Halibut fishing with Alaska Fishing Company

Halibut fishing is bottom fishing: getting bait down to where these fish live and being ready when the rod loads up. It is a different rhythm from trolling for salmon, with quiet stretches broken by the strongest pulls of the trip. Guests have boated halibut well over a hundred pounds with Jim, and it is no accident. He has years of experience across every fishery Ketchikan offers, and putting guests on big halibut is a regular part of his season.

All the heavy bottom-fishing gear, tackle, and bait are included. Halibut fishing rewards time and location, and the better halibut grounds take running time to reach, which is one more reason we recommend the full-day trip.

More than halibut down there

Bottom fishing around Ketchikan brings up more than halibut. Depending on the day and the regulations in effect, the mix can include:

  • Lingcod. Aggressive, toothy, and excellent eating. Some real giants come over the rail.
  • Rockfish. Bright orange and hard fighting for their size, they make great table fare and great photos.

Seasons and limits for bottomfish change from year to year, and sometimes in the middle of a season. We fish to whatever the rules are on the day you are aboard. Check the Alaska Department of Fish & Game regulations for the latest, or just ask us when you book.

From the rail to your freezer

Halibut means serious meat, and dealing with it is easier than most guests expect. Back at the dock, the processing crew meets the boat and takes the catch straight from us. They can cut, vacuum seal, freeze, box, and store your fish, and get it ready to fly home with you or ship. The details are on our fish processing page.

Want to spend a morning trolling for salmon and an afternoon over the bottom? That’s the salmon and halibut combo. Not sure which trip fits? Send us your dates and we’ll give you a straight recommendation.

Full days are $575 per person with a four-angler minimum. Fewer than four? You can share the boat with other anglers, or reserve the whole boat for $2,300 and keep it private. See rates for everything included.
